Kathy Bates Biography:

This outstanding character actress was born June 28, 1948, in Memphis, Tenn. She graduated with a BFA in Theatre from Southern Methodist University and made a brief film debut in Taking Off (1971).

Bates excelled in theatre while making occasional films in the 1970s and '80s; the female lead in the play "Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune" was written for her, but the film version role went to Michelle Pfeiffer. Instead, Bates was cast as the disturbed Annie Wilkes in Misery (1990).

Her career-defining performance earned the Best Actress Academy Award, and she followed it with striking work in At Play in the Fields of the Lord, Fried Green Tomatoes, Dolores Claiborne and Titanic. Supporting Actress Oscar nominations for Primary Colors (1998) and About Schmidt (2002) are among Bates's recent accolades.
