How does the Netflix free trial work?

Netflix offers an introductory free trial. A new member can go and signup and start receiving movies and testing out the service for 14 days for free. If the service doesn't work out for any reason, the new member can cancel and return the DVDs and pay nothing.

The signup process is relatively painless - and requires a credit card as a means of a security deposit for the DVDs - similar to any local video store. The fun part is selecting all the movies you have been wanting to see - from the new releases on DVD to older classics and everything in between.

The Netflix site has several features that make the service easy to use, such as movie recommendations based on the user's ratings of other movies, movie reviews from users and well-known critics, and a very sophisticated system of presenting users with movies that they are most likely to enjoy watching. There is also the ability to 'SAVE' movies in your Queue that have been released in the theaters, but have yet to be distributed on DVD.

And when it comes time to cancel your subscription, that is easy as well, with no hard sell to keep you as a member. In fact, a lot of Netflix users who do cancel their subscription go back and signup again at a later time.
