What is Netflix?

Netflix.com is an online dvd rental service that started renting movies on a subscription basis back in 1999. At first the subscription service was called the Marque Program, as at the time Netflix also rented DVD movies on an individual basis. Since that time it has steadily grown in member base - with a reported total membership of close to 2 million at this time.

Netflix is an online DVD rental service with a very simple program:

1. Members signup and choose their DVD movie titles.
2. Netflix sends the movies to the member in the US mail, postage paid.
3. The member watches the movie and then returns it to Netflix and receives the next DVD movie on their Queue.

The Netflix site has several features that make the service easy to use, such as movie recommendations based on the user's ratings of other movies, movie reviews from users and well-known critics, and a very sophisticated system of presenting users with movies that they are most likely to enjoy watching. There is also the ability to 'SAVE' movies in your Queue that have been released in the theaters, but have yet to be distributed on DVD.

Netflix has also opened serveral distribution warehouses around the country to make the turnaround time minimal for members, therefore allowing users the opportunity to watch more movies for the cost of their subscription.
